2023: More heavy weights loose PDP primaries

The curtain dropped yesterday on the senatorial primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with more big wigs crashing out of the race to represent their districts in the Red Chamber from next year.

It was however, smoot sails for Governors Okezie Ikpazu (Abia), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Darius Ishaku (Taraba) and former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson. They  got tickets to represent their senatorial zones.

Those who lost their bids include: Dino Melaye (Kogi West); Danjumah La’ah (Kaduna South) and ID Nyang (Plateau North).

Melaye, who lost his bid to retain his seat in the Upper Legislative Chamber to Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2019 election, was beaten to the PDP ticket by Tajudeen Yusuf.

Yusuf is House of Representatives member from Kabba/Bunu/Ijumu Constituency.

La’ah, who was recently named Senate Deputy Minority Whip, lost his bid to retain the ticket. He was defeated by House of Representatives member Sunday Marshal Katung.

The Kaduna senator became a principal official, following the defection of Senator Ibrahim Abdulllahi Danbaba (Sokoto South) to the APC.

Also in Kaduna, Adam Sambo, son of former Vice President Namadi Sambo, lost his bid to wrest the ticket for the Kaduna North Federal Constituency to incumbent House of Representatives member Samila Suleiman.

Suleiman defected to the PDP from the APC.

Prof Ango Abdullahi’s son, Sadik Ango, clinched the Sabon Gari Federal Constituency ticket.

Gyang lost his bid to fly the PDP ticket for (Plateau North) as he lost to two-term House of Representatives member from Barkin Ladi/Riyom Constituency, Simon Mwadkwon.

Ugwuanyi picked the Enugu North ticket after polling 299 to beat his closest rival, Eze Godwin, who got 16 votes. Another aspirant, Okanye Celestine, recorded no vote.

Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani retained the ticket for Enugu East.

In Katsina, Senator Ahmed Kaita, who recently defected from the ruling APC, got the ticket to fly the PDP flag in the Katsina North District. He was returned unopposed.

Two former commissioners in Bauchi – Samila Dahuwa Kaila (Health) and Dairu Garba (Commerce) – won the tickets for Bauchi North and South senatorial seat tickets respectively.

Senator Dickson polled 57 to beat Donald Daunemigha to stand election for Bayelsa West next year.

Daunemigha withdrew from the race few minutes to the commencement of the election.

The Bayelsa East ticket went to former Chief of Staff, Government House, Benson Agadada.

The Lagos PDP tickets went to Segun Adewale (West), Wale Gomez (Central) and Nicholas Akobada (East).

In Osun, former State Chairman of the PDP Gani Ola-Oluwa lost the Osun Central ticket to Olubiyi Fadeyi. Incumbent Senator Francis Fadahunsi retained the ticket for Osun East.
