How to Tell If Eggs Are Bad or good

Eggs can ultimately go bad, even though they have a good shelf life when properly maintained. There are, however, a number of quick ways to determine whether an egg is still safe to consume. Among other important elements, eggs are a great source of protein. In this post, we'll examine a few simple methods for determining if an egg is safe to consume or not. According to Medical News Today, below are four main ways to test if an egg is still safe to consume.

1. The float test

An easy and quick technique to determine whether an egg is fresh is to use the float test. It gives a helpful estimate of an egg's age, but it cannot tell whether an egg has gone bad. The egg should be placed in a big bowl of water to conduct the float test. It is still fresh if it sinks to the bottom. Older eggs will either float or stand on end. The egg's buoyancy is increased when air accumulates inside it over time, which is why the float test is effective.

2. Visual examination

An egg may occasionally appear or feel strange. One should look for any indications of potential contamination or rottenness. Eggs with cracked shells, powder on the shell, or a slimy-feeling shell should be thrown away. Eggs with slimy or fractured shells may have picked up bacteria, while mold growth on the shell may be indicated by a powdered substance.

3. Smell test

Smelling an egg is one of the quickest and most accurate ways to determine whether it has gone rotten. According to WebMD, a rotten egg will emit a terrible smell when the shell is cracked open. It doesn't matter whether the egg has previously been fried; this smell will still be present. In certain situations, people may smell the rotting odor of an egg before they crack it open, especially if it is very old or rotten.

4. Candling

Producers utilize the candling method to check the egg's quality. This involves examining eggs under a bright light to look for indications of cracking and internal flaws. However, candling can also be done at home by holding or hanging an egg in front of a bright light like a lamp or a strong flashlight in a darkened area. When they hold it up to the light, you should be able to see the air bubble inside the egg. The air cell is a little sac or bubble that is typically seen in the egg's bigger end... Continue Reading
