United States Will Respond If Russia Uses Chemical Weapons In Ukraine - President Biden
The United Nations General Assembly, in an emergency meeting on Thursday, adopted a resolution blaming Russia for a humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and called for a peaceful and immediate end to the war.
The resolution said it “deplores in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine” and “urges the immediate peaceful resolution of the conflict.”
Russia and Ukraine should engage in political dialogue, negotiations, mediation and other peaceful means in hopes of ending the war, according to the resolution.
Nevertheless, President Biden said the U.S. will respond if Russia uses chemical weapons in Ukraine, following a meeting with NATO leaders to address new measures to help Ukraine in the month-long war.
“We would respond. We would respond if he uses it,” Mr. Biden said during a news conference when asked about a possible response if Russian President Vladimir Putin uses chemical weapons in Ukraine.
Biden added that the "nature of the response would depend on the nature of the use".
However, NATO leaders called on China to openly oppose Russia's "brutal war" in Ukraine, alliance head Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday, after a special summit that discussed Beijing's role in the crisis.
